Cars could be sold on Sundays after state department suggests change to rule first set in 1940s

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) is recommending that the Colorado General Assembly remove a law that prohibits selling motor vehicles on Sundays.

This is a "Blue Law," which means it has already been removed in other states in the past. The law was put into place in the 1940s when most dealerships were owned by families, and it allowed one day for them to spend time together.

Doing this will allow businesses like auto dealerships to sell vehicles on any day of the week.

DORA says part of the reason for the change is car dealerships are a lot different than they were 80 years ago. Now that people can buy vehicles online on any day of the week, the current law keeps auto dealerships in the state from competing on Sunday.

If the rule is put in place, DORA says it would be beneficial not only for dealerships but also for customers to have both weekend days to buy cars.

One dealership KRDO13 spoke with says they would oppose changing the law, as having a guaranteed day off is one of the perks of having a demanding job like running a car dealership.

The recommendation from DORA is yet to be reviewed by the state legislature.
